This charming tripod 'bowl' is from the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), a time when Japan transitioned to being an isolated society to a more modernized one. During this time, Japan showcased its artistry of intricate, detailed metal work.

WHAT WAS IT USED FOR?

The brazier was a copper or bronze bowl insert, which would be filled with hot coals and set into a wooden 'table'. It would either heat a room or heat boiling water for a tea ceremony.

WHAT DESIGN IS FEATURED ON IT?

On this one, animals such as a dragon, turtle and bird are featured on four sides.
